Why Is My Ford Engine Knocking?

Of all the complaints that arrive at a Ford engine workshop, knocking is the one we take most seriously on the phone. Rattles, whines and ticks can often wait a few days. A deep, rhythmic knock usually cannot. It is the sound of metal moving where it should not be moving, and every mile driven after it starts tends to make the repair bigger and more expensive.
The difficulty for owners is that "knocking" covers a wide range of noises, from a harmless tick that has been there for years to a genuinely terminal bottom-end problem. This article explains what causes knocking noises in Ford petrol and diesel engines, how the different sounds behave, and what you should and should not do when you hear one.
First, the safety rule
If a new knocking noise appears and it gets louder or faster as engine speed rises, stop driving the car. Pull over somewhere safe, switch the engine off and arrange recovery. This is not workshop scaremongering. Most of the truly destroyed engines we see were driven for a while after the noise started, because the car still moved and the owner hoped it would settle down. It does not settle down.
The same applies with even more force if the knock arrives alongside an oil pressure warning light. Read our advice on low oil pressure — but the short version is that an oil pressure warning plus a knocking noise means the engine should not be running at all.
Where the noise is coming from tells you a lot
Engine noises broadly divide into top-end and bottom-end. It is a crude split, but it is how a technician starts thinking.
Top-end noise comes from the cylinder head area — valves, camshafts, followers, injectors. It tends to be a lighter, faster tick or tap, often most noticeable on a cold start and sometimes quieter once oil pressure builds and everything warms up. It usually sits high in the engine when you listen.
Bottom-end noise comes from the crankshaft, bearings, connecting rods and pistons. It is deeper, heavier and more of a knock than a tick. Classic bottom-end knock gets worse under load, deepens as the engine warms up rather than improving, and rises in frequency with engine speed. This is the noise that ends engines.
There is a third category worth naming: noises that are not the engine at all. Worn auxiliary belt tensioners, a failing alternator or air conditioning compressor bearing, a loose heat shield, or a broken exhaust mounting can all produce knocks and rattles that sound alarmingly internal from the driver's seat. Establishing this early is one of the more satisfying parts of the job, because it turns a feared bill into a small one.
Cause 1: Low oil pressure and oil starvation
Engine bearings do not actually touch the crankshaft in a healthy engine. They ride on a thin, pressurised film of oil. Take that pressure away and metal contacts metal at thousands of revolutions per minute. The knock you hear is the result.
Oil pressure can drop for several reasons: the level is simply too low, the oil has degraded and thinned, the pump is worn, the pressure relief valve is stuck, or — very commonly on modern Fords — the oil pickup strainer is restricted.
That last point deserves emphasis on EcoBoost and EcoBlue engines fitted with a belt-in-oil timing arrangement. As the belt ages it sheds material into the sump. That debris collects on the pickup screen and gradually strangles the oil supply. The engine can be full of oil and still be starved of pressure. It is one of the main reasons we push owners so hard on timely wet belt replacement — the belt itself is a service item, but the damage it causes when neglected is not.
Cause 2: Detonation and pre-ignition
In normal running, the spark plug lights the fuel and air mixture and the flame spreads smoothly across the combustion chamber. Detonation is when part of that mixture ignites on its own, out of sequence, and the two pressure waves collide. The metallic rattle this produces is often called pinking, and on a turbocharged engine it is genuinely destructive.
Detonation typically shows up as a rattle under load — accelerating hard, climbing a hill, pulling a trailer — rather than at idle. Contributing factors include fuel of a lower octane than the engine expects, heavy carbon deposits creating hot spots, an engine running hotter than it should, and boost or fuel delivery problems that upset the air-fuel ratio.
Modern engine management includes knock sensors that detect detonation and retard ignition timing to protect the engine. That protection is real, but it is not unlimited, and it costs you power — which is why detonation and the "my car feels flat" complaint often turn up together. If you can hear detonation clearly from the driver's seat, the protection is already being overwhelmed.
Cause 3: Big end and main bearing wear
This is the classic, serious knock. Big end bearings sit between the connecting rods and the crankshaft; main bearings support the crankshaft in the block. When either wears beyond its designed clearance, the rod or crank hammers against the bearing shell every combustion cycle.
The sound is a deep, regular knock that keeps time with engine speed. It is often clearest just off idle with the engine warm, and it typically becomes louder under load. In the later stages the knock is audible from outside the car with the bonnet closed.
Bearing wear rarely happens for no reason. Extended oil change intervals, running low on oil, oil dilution from fuel or coolant, overheating, or debris circulating in the oil are the usual histories. Once bearings have knocked, the crankshaft journals are usually damaged too, which is why this is normally a strip-down job. Depending on the extent, that means either a full engine rebuild with a reground or replaced crankshaft and new bearings, or a replacement engine.
Cause 4: Piston-related noises
Piston slap is a hollow, muffled knock caused by the piston rocking slightly in a worn bore. It is characteristically loudest on a cold engine and often quietens considerably once everything has warmed and expanded. On its own it is a sign of general wear rather than imminent failure, but it usually travels in company with higher oil consumption.
More serious is a broken piston ring land or a cracked piston, which can follow sustained detonation or an object entering the cylinder. That produces a sharper knock, usually accompanied by a misfire, smoke and poor compression on the affected cylinder.
Worst of all, and thankfully rarest, is a piston contacting a valve after timing has slipped. On an interference engine this causes immediate, severe internal damage. It is another reason timing components are not something to defer.
Cause 5: Diesel-specific knocking
Diesel engines are naturally noisier, and Transit and Ranger owners are used to a certain amount of clatter. What matters is change. A diesel that has developed a new knock, or become noticeably harsher than it was six months ago, is telling you something.
Common diesel causes include injector faults, where a poorly atomising injector delivers fuel badly and produces a harsh combustion knock on one cylinder; incorrect injector coding after replacement; glow plug problems producing rough, knocking cold running; and carbon build-up altering combustion. Cause 6: The wrong fuel
It happens more often than people admit. Petrol in a diesel is the more damaging misfuel, because diesel fuel lubricates the high-pressure fuel system and petrol does not. The engine may run briefly, knock heavily and then fail. Diesel in a petrol car generally causes heavy smoke and refusal to run properly.
If you realise you have misfuelled, do not start the engine. Have the car recovered. The cost of draining and flushing a fuel system is trivial next to the cost of replacing a contaminated high-pressure pump, injectors and lines.
How we diagnose a knocking engine
Our approach is methodical, because the difference between a tensioner pulley and a bottom end is thousands of pounds.
- Listen properly. We use a stethoscope and, where useful, electronic listening equipment to locate the noise, at idle, with load applied and at different temperatures.
- Check oil first. Level, condition, smell and — critically — whether there is metal or belt debris present. A magnetic check and a look at the filter tell us a great deal.
- Measure oil pressure mechanically. Not from the dashboard light, which only reports a threshold, but with a gauge on the engine.
- Read live data and codes. Knock sensor activity, ignition timing corrections, fuel trims and injector correction values all narrow the cause. See Ford engine diagnostics.
- Test compression, and leak-down if needed. This separates a healthy engine with an accessory problem from an engine with internal damage.
- Inspect internally where justified. A borescope through a spark plug or injector hole shows piston crowns and bore condition without a strip-down.
Only then do we quote. If the news is bad, we say so plainly and set out the realistic options rather than starting a repair and discovering halfway through that the engine was never worth saving.
Repair, rebuild or replace?
Where a knock turns out to be mechanical, there are usually three routes. A targeted repair works when the damage is contained — a set of bearings on an otherwise sound engine, for example, with the cause of oil starvation properly addressed. A full rebuild suits engines with wider wear, where the block, crank and head are all measured, machined where necessary and reassembled to specification. A replacement engine makes sense when the damage is severe or the economics simply do not support a rebuild.

Preventing the next one
Most bottom-end failures we see were preventable. Change the oil on time with the correct specification. Check the level between services — modern engines can use oil quite legitimately, and a car that is a litre low is a car at risk. Address oil leaks rather than topping up around them. Replace timing belts and belt-in-oil components on schedule. Let a cold engine warm before working it hard, and let a hard-worked turbo idle briefly before shutdown.
None of that is exotic. It is simply the difference between an engine that lasts and one that knocks.
