Engine rebuilds have a reputation — sometimes deserved — for being unpredictable. Done badly, they are. Done by a specialist who actually understands the engine in question, they're often the most cost-effective and most reliable route back to a healthy vehicle. As Ford specialists offering engine rebuild Manchester customers can trust, we focus on doing fewer rebuilds, but doing them properly.

We rebuild Ford 1.0, 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost petrol engines, and Ford 2.0 EcoBlue and TDCi diesel engines — including the units fitted to most Transits, Customs, Rangers and Focus diesels. If your engine is outside that range, we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right workshop for it.

When does an engine need rebuilding?

  • Catastrophic wet belt failure that's contaminated the lubrication system.
  • Major bearing or crank failure showing low oil pressure or a deep knock.
  • Severe head gasket failure with warped or cracked components.
  • Turbo failure that's pushed debris into the cylinders.
  • High mileage where compression and economy have dropped significantly.

Before recommending a rebuild, we'll always price up the alternatives — a quality used engine, a remanufactured unit, or a partial repair — and tell you honestly which option makes the most sense for your vehicle, mileage and budget.

Our rebuild process

Every rebuild we carry out follows the same disciplined process. There are no shortcuts.

  1. Removal and full strip-down. The engine comes out, comes apart, and every component is laid out for inspection.
  2. Measurement and machining. Block, head, crank and rods are measured against Ford's tolerances. Anything outside spec is machined or replaced.
  3. Parts list and quote. You get an itemised list of every part we plan to fit, with prices and a fixed total. No work begins until you approve it.
  4. Assembly with new components. Pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, seals, water pump, oil pump, timing components — all new, all to spec.
  5. Refit and run-in. The engine goes back in, all fluids are renewed, and we run the engine in carefully before handing it back.
  6. Diagnostic check and road test. Live data is reviewed, error codes cleared, and a real road test confirms the job before the keys come back to you.

Full rebuild vs partial rebuild

Not every engine needs a complete bottom-end overhaul. Many EcoBoost failures, for example, can be solved with a top-end rebuild plus a wet belt and oil pump replacement. Many Transit diesel issues are head-related rather than block-related. We carry out the smallest job that genuinely solves the problem — and we'll explain in plain English why.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from our Manchester workshop.

How much does an engine rebuild cost in Manchester?

It varies widely depending on the engine and what's failed. Ford 1.0 EcoBoost top-end rebuilds typically start around £1,800; full rebuilds and Transit diesel rebuilds usually fall between £2,800 and £4,500. We give a fixed price after inspection.

Is a rebuild better than a replacement engine?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. A good used engine can be cheaper, but you inherit unknown history. A proper rebuild gives you new internals and a warranty. We'll tell you honestly which makes sense for your car.

How long does a rebuild take?

Most rebuilds take 7–14 working days from drop-off to handover, including parts ordering and run-in time.

Will the engine be as good as new?

When done properly with the right parts and tolerances, a rebuild can restore the engine to factory performance and reliability. We've had rebuilt customer engines go on to do another 100,000+ miles without issue.

Do you rebuild engines other than Ford?

Our speciality is Ford. We'll happily take a look at adjacent units (PSA-shared diesels, for example) but we'll always be upfront if it's outside our wheelhouse.
