A misfire is a cylinder failing to do its job — and the reason can be as simple as a spark plug or as serious as a compression loss. We test rather than guess, so you replace the part that is actually at fault and not the three around it.
Misfires are the fault we are asked about most often, and the one where guesswork costs owners the most money. A juddering idle or a stumble under acceleration means one or more cylinders are not burning their fuel properly. Getting to the cause means working out which of the three ingredients is missing: spark, fuel, or compression.
Every misfire has an answer. On a Ford EcoBoost it might be a coil breaking down only under boost. On a diesel it might be an injector leaking back more than it should. On a high-mileage engine it might be a valve that no longer seals. The car's own fault codes will usually tell you which cylinder — P0301 through P0304 — but never why, and that is the part that needs a workshop.
Symptoms of a misfire
- Shaking or juddering at idle, often most obvious with the car stationary in gear.
- Hesitation, stumbling or a flat spot when accelerating, particularly under load or up a hill.
- A flashing engine management light — this indicates an active misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter, and warrants stopping.
- Poor fuel economy, because unburnt fuel is being wasted every cycle.
- A popping or spitting noise from the exhaust, or an uneven exhaust note.
- Hard starting, or a rough first minute that smooths out as the engine warms.
- A smell of unburnt fuel from the tailpipe.
- Loss of power or limp mode where the engine has reduced output to protect itself.
Cold-only misfires, wet-weather misfires and under-load-only misfires all point in different directions, so the pattern you describe genuinely helps. If it only happens in the rain, we look hard at insulation and tracking on the ignition side. If it only happens above a certain boost pressure, we look at coils, fuel supply and compression.
Common causes on Ford engines
Spark plugs
Plugs are consumables. Worn electrodes need more voltage to fire, and a small turbocharged engine under boost is the hardest place for a spark to survive. Plugs left beyond their interval, or fitted at the wrong gap or heat range, are behind a large share of the misfires we see. They are also the cheapest thing to eliminate.
Ignition coils
Coil packs fail with heat and age, and they often fail selectively — fine at idle, breaking down under load when cylinder pressure is highest. That is why a coil can test acceptable on the bench and still cause a misfire on the road. Oil leaking down a plug well from a failing seal will also kill a coil.
Fuel injectors
Direct injection injectors carbon up, stick, or lose their spray pattern. On diesels, excessive back-leak means a cylinder never receives the fuel it was commanded. Injector faults produce cylinder-specific misfires and, on diesels, a characteristic knock and smoke.
Carbon build-up on the valves
Direct injection engines spray fuel straight into the cylinder, so no fuel washes over the back of the intake valves. Carbon accumulates there over the years and disturbs airflow into the cylinder, giving rough running, cold-start stumble and hesitation. It builds gradually, so owners often adapt to it without realising.
Air and vacuum leaks
A split hose, a leaking intake gasket, a failed breather diaphragm or a loose charge pipe lets unmeasured air into the engine. The mixture goes lean, fuel trims move to compensate, and the result is an unstable idle and intermittent misfires.
Compression loss
If a cylinder cannot hold pressure, no amount of spark or fuel will fix it. Burnt or tight valves, worn rings, a failing head gasket or bore damage all cause a persistent misfire on one cylinder that never responds to parts. This is why we test compression before anyone spends money on ignition components.
Timing faults
A stretched timing chain, a worn tensioner, or a degrading wet belt lets valve timing drift away from where it should be. The symptoms are rough running, poor power and correlation fault codes, and the fix is mechanical rather than electrical. Sensor and wiring faults
Crank and cam sensors, a chafed injector loom or a corroded connector can all produce misfire codes without any component being mechanically faulty. We test circuits properly rather than swapping parts and hoping.
How we diagnose a misfire
- Read codes and freeze frame. Which cylinder, at what load, temperature and speed the misfire was recorded — this shapes everything that follows.
- Live misfire counters. We watch per-cylinder misfire counts in real time, at idle, under load and on the road, so we can see whether the fault moves or stays put.
- Fuel trim analysis. Short and long term trims tell us whether the engine is compensating for a lean or rich condition, and whether the problem affects one cylinder or the whole bank.
- Component swap testing. Moving a coil or injector to another cylinder and seeing whether the misfire follows it is quick, free, and conclusive.
- Ignition testing. Plug condition and gap, coil resistance and, where needed, oscilloscope analysis of the ignition waveform under load.
- Fuel system testing. Rail pressure, injector balance, and back-leak testing on diesels.
- Compression and leak-down testing. The mechanical check that either rules out the bottom end or explains everything. Leak-down tells us where the pressure is escaping — valves, rings or head gasket.
- Smoke testing. For air leaks in the induction and vacuum system.
- Borescope inspection. A camera into the cylinder to check for carbon, coolant washing or damage before anything major is quoted.
Repair options
- Ignition service — plugs and coils to the correct specification, plus repair of any oil leak that shortened their life.
- Injector cleaning or renewal, with coding and calibration where the engine requires it.
- Carbon removal from the intake and valves for direct injection engines with airflow-related running problems.
- Air leak repair — hoses, gaskets, breathers and charge pipes.
- Timing correction — chain, tensioner or wet belt renewal where valve timing has drifted.
- Cylinder head work where valves are burnt or no longer sealing.

We always confirm the repair with a road test and a fresh misfire count before the car is handed back. A misfire that has been repaired should show zero counts under the same conditions that produced it.

Why a flashing light changes things
A steady engine management light with a slight judder can usually be driven gently to a garage. A flashing light cannot. Unburnt fuel passing into a hot catalytic converter can destroy it in a short distance, adding a substantial and entirely avoidable cost to whatever caused the misfire. Petrol misfires and diesel misfires are different problems
On a petrol EcoBoost, the ignition system is in play: plugs, coils, and the voltage needed to jump a gap inside a pressurised cylinder. Diesels have no spark at all, so a diesel misfire is always about fuelling or compression. Injector back-leak, a worn injector nozzle, poor compression from a burnt valve or worn rings, or a glow plug fault affecting cold running are the usual causes. The diagnostic route is therefore different from the outset, and treating a diesel misfire as if it were an ignition problem wastes time and money.
What a leak-down test tells us that compression cannot
A compression test gives a number. A leak-down test tells you where the pressure is going, which is far more useful. We pressurise the cylinder with the piston at top dead centre and listen: air at the intake means an inlet valve, air at the exhaust means an exhaust valve, air in the crankcase means rings or bores, and bubbles in the expansion tank mean the head gasket. In one test we can separate a cylinder head repair from a bottom-end rebuild, and give you a properly informed quote instead of an educated guess.
Misfires that damage other things
An untreated misfire rarely stays a single fault. Unburnt fuel entering the exhaust destroys catalytic converters and, on a diesel, overloads the particulate filter with unburnt hydrocarbons. Fuel washing down the bore dilutes the oil, which reduces its ability to protect bearings. Oxygen sensors become contaminated and start reporting inaccurately, which in turn upsets fuelling on the healthy cylinders. What began as one coil can therefore end up as a coil, a catalytic converter, a sensor and an early oil change — which is why we would always rather see the car early.
Preventing repeat misfires
Once the fault is repaired, a few habits keep it away. Replace spark plugs at the interval specified for your engine rather than waiting for symptoms, and use the correct part rather than the nearest equivalent. Fix oil leaks into the plug wells promptly, since oil is what kills coils early. Use good quality fuel, particularly on direct injection engines. And if a hesitation starts to creep back, book it in while it is still intermittent — an early misfire is a diagnostic job, while a late one can be a mechanical one.

Can I drive with a misfire?
If the light is steady and the car drives reasonably, a short careful journey to a workshop is usually acceptable. If the light is flashing, stop driving — an active misfire can destroy the catalytic converter quickly.
The code says cylinder 2. Should I just change that coil?
It is a reasonable place to start, but the code names the cylinder, not the failed part. Swapping the coil to another cylinder to see whether the misfire follows takes minutes and avoids fitting parts you do not need.
Why does my Ford only misfire when it is cold or damp?
Cold and damp misfires usually point to ignition insulation, tracking or a coil that only fails at certain temperatures. Cold-only misfires can also indicate carbon on the valves or an injector that seals poorly when cold.
Can a misfire be caused by something mechanical?
Yes. Low compression from worn rings, burnt valves or a failing head gasket, and timing drift from a stretched chain or worn wet belt, all cause misfires that no ignition part will fix.
How long does misfire diagnosis take?
Many are identified within an hour. Intermittent and load-dependent misfires take longer because the fault has to be recreated on the road, and we will agree the time with you first.
Will new spark plugs fix my misfire?
Sometimes, and they are always worth checking. But fitting plugs to a misfire caused by compression loss or an injector fault simply delays the real diagnosis.
