Ford Engine Cranks But Won't Start

An engine that cranks but will not start is, oddly, better news than one that does nothing at all. If the starter motor is turning the engine over at a healthy speed, the battery, starter and main earths are broadly doing their job. The problem lies somewhere in the three things an engine needs to run: fuel, ignition and compression at the right moment — plus, on any modern Ford, permission from the security system.

This guide walks through what each of those failures feels and sounds like, what you can check safely at the roadside, and how we work through it in the workshop. It applies to EcoBoost petrol engines and to Transit and Ranger diesels alike, with the differences flagged where they matter.

Start by describing the crank

Not all cranking is equal, and the character of it is genuinely diagnostic.

  • Slow, laboured cranking points at battery, charging or starter problems, or occasionally at heavy mechanical drag inside the engine.
  • Fast, unusually free cranking — the engine spinning noticeably more easily than normal — can indicate lost compression, and on a timing-driven engine it can mean the camshaft is no longer turning with the crankshaft. That is a stop-immediately situation.
  • Normal cranking with no attempt to fire is the most common presentation and usually means fuel, spark or security.
  • Normal cranking with occasional coughs means it is very nearly running. Something is present but insufficient — weak fuel pressure, marginal spark or a sensor giving poor data.

Note the conditions too. Only when cold? Only when hot? Only after standing for days? Started fine yesterday? Did anything happen just before — a breakdown, a jump start, a fuel fill, a battery change, a service?

Fuel supply problems

No fuel, no start. It sounds obvious, but fuel faults are common and range from the embarrassing to the expensive.

The simplest is an empty tank or a faulty fuel gauge sender telling you there is more in there than there is. Next up is the in-tank fuel pump. When you switch the ignition on, most cars prime the pump for a second or two — a faint whirr from the rear of the car. No prime noise at all is a strong clue, though not proof, as pump relay and wiring faults produce the same silence.

On diesels, a blocked or waterlogged fuel filter is a frequent cause, especially on vans that do high mileage. Air in the fuel system after a filter change or after running the tank dry will also prevent starting until the system is properly bled. Diesel systems can also suffer from fuel waxing in genuinely cold weather, though that is rarer in Manchester than in colder climates.

On direct-injection petrol engines there are two pressure stages, and either can fail. A high-pressure pump problem often produces long cranking followed by a reluctant start, before eventually becoming a no-start. Injectors that are stuck open or closed cause similar difficulty, sometimes with a strong fuel smell.

Misfuelling belongs here too. If the car stopped shortly after a fill-up, or will not start immediately after one, say so straight away. Do not keep cranking — that pushes contaminated fuel further through the system.

Ignition faults on petrol engines

A petrol engine needs a strong spark at the right instant. Weak or absent spark generally comes from failed coil packs, worn or fuel-fouled spark plugs, wiring or connector damage, or a crankshaft position sensor failure that leaves the engine management unable to time the spark at all.

Plug fouling deserves a mention because owners often cause it accidentally. Repeated failed start attempts wash the plugs with fuel until they cannot spark at all, converting a "hard to start" fault into a "will not start" one. If the engine does not fire within a few seconds of cranking, stop and wait rather than grinding away at it. You will also save the starter motor and battery.

Diesel cold-start systems

Diesels have no spark plugs. They rely on compression heat, assisted at low temperatures by glow plugs. When glow plugs or their control module fail, a diesel that starts perfectly in mild weather can refuse to start on a cold morning, often cranking a long time and then firing on two or three cylinders with white smoke.

Because the fault is temperature dependent, it is easy to dismiss as "the van being difficult in winter". It is not — it is a repairable fault, and running a diesel repeatedly on partial cold starts is hard on the engine.

Immobiliser and security faults

Every modern Ford has an immobiliser that must recognise the key before it will allow the engine to run. When it does not, the car will typically crank normally and never fire, and you may see a security or key symbol on the dash — sometimes flashing rapidly rather than following its usual pattern.

Causes include a failed key transponder, a flat key battery on keyless systems, a damaged antenna ring around the ignition, or communication faults between modules. Aftermarket alarms, trackers and dashcams wired into the vehicle are a recurring source of trouble here, as is a poorly executed battery change or jump start that has upset a module.

The useful diagnostic detail is that an immobiliser no-start is usually a very clean no-start: the engine cranks steadily, sounds entirely healthy, and simply never attempts to fire. There is no coughing, no smoke, no smell of fuel.

Timing faults

For an engine to run, the crankshaft and camshafts must be synchronised. A slipped or failed timing belt or chain breaks that relationship, and the engine cannot start no matter how good the fuel and spark are.

On Ford's belt-in-oil engines this is a particular concern, because the belt degrades internally where nobody can see it. Symptoms before failure can include a rattle on start-up, oil pressure warnings or the engine light. After failure, you often get that distinctive fast, easy cranking as compression is lost.

Because most of these engines are interference designs, valves and pistons can occupy the same space when timing is lost. That means a snapped belt frequently causes internal damage requiring a engine rebuild rather than just new timing components. If your car has stopped suddenly and now cranks freely without firing, do not keep cranking — every attempt risks further damage. Sensor failures

The crankshaft position sensor is the classic no-start sensor. It tells the engine management where the crankshaft is; without that signal, there is no injection and no ignition. When it fails outright you get a clean crank with no fire. When it fails intermittently — often heat-related — you get a car that cuts out when hot and refuses to restart until it cools, then behaves perfectly at the workshop.

Camshaft position sensors can cause extended cranking, since the engine management may have to work harder to establish synchronisation. Other contributors include failed relays, blown fuses, damaged wiring looms and, occasionally, water ingress into a connector.

What to check safely at the roadside

There are a few checks worth making before calling anyone, and none require tools or risk.

  • Is there fuel in the tank? Trust the pump receipt, not the gauge.
  • Is the car properly in Park or Neutral? Automatics will not crank — or sometimes will crank but not start — if the selector or its switch is unhappy.
  • Turn the ignition on and listen for the fuel pump prime from the rear of the vehicle.
  • Watch the warning lights. Do they illuminate and go out normally, or is a security symbol behaving oddly? On a diesel, does the glow plug light come on and go off?
  • Try the spare key. If the car starts, you have found an immobiliser or key fault.
  • Check for obvious signs: a strong fuel smell, a visibly disconnected hose, steam, or a puddle under the car.

What not to do: do not crank repeatedly in long bursts, do not spray starting fluid into the intake, and do not tow-start a modern car. All three can turn a modest fault into a major one.

How we work through a no-start

In the workshop we test rather than guess. We start with battery and cranking speed, because weak cranking makes every other test unreliable. We scan all modules, not just the engine, and look at freeze-frame data for the conditions when things went wrong.

From there we confirm the basics in turn: is the crankshaft signal present while cranking; is fuel pressure reaching specification; is there spark or, on a diesel, is the injection system commanding delivery; and is compression healthy. A relative compression test using cranking current is a quick, non-invasive way to spot a mechanical or timing problem before anything is dismantled. We will also check timing alignment where the symptoms point that way.

The point of the order is that it narrows to a single cause without replacing parts speculatively. It is the same discipline we apply to all Ford engine diagnostics.

Automatic gearboxes and other false alarms

Not every "won't start" is an engine problem. On automatics, a worn or misadjusted transmission range sensor can leave the car cranking in a gear position it should not, or refusing to start in Park while starting happily in Neutral. Trying Neutral is a two-second test that occasionally solves the mystery outright, and it tells us where to look if it does.

Poor earth connections are another regular finding. A corroded engine-to-body earth strap can allow enough current for the starter to spin the engine while starving the ignition and injection systems of a stable reference. The symptoms look electrical and random, which is precisely what makes them frustrating to chase without proper voltage-drop testing.

Aftermarket electrical accessories deserve a mention too. Trackers, alarms, dashcams and hands-free kits are frequently spliced into circuits they should not be, and a failing accessory can pull a module offline or drain a battery overnight. Intermittent no-starts: the hardest kind

A car that fails to start once a fortnight and then behaves perfectly at the workshop is the most difficult version of this fault. Guesswork is especially expensive here, because you cannot prove a repair has worked simply by starting the engine once.

The approach that works is evidence gathering. Stored fault codes and freeze-frame data record the conditions at the time of the failure. Some faults can be recreated deliberately — heating a suspect crankshaft sensor, for example, to reproduce a heat-related dropout. Where necessary, we monitor the relevant circuits over a period so the fault is captured rather than inferred.

You can help enormously by noting the pattern: was it hot or cold, wet or dry, after a short trip or a long one, first thing in the morning or after the car sat in the sun all afternoon? Those details often point straight at the answer.

Why repeated cranking causes damage

It is worth being blunt about this, because it is the most common way owners make things worse. Long bursts of cranking overheat the starter motor, flatten the battery and, on petrol engines, soak the spark plugs with fuel until they cannot spark at all.

On a diesel, prolonged cranking with a fuelling fault can wash oil off the cylinder walls and push unburnt fuel into the sump, diluting the oil. If a timing fault is the underlying cause, every additional crank risks bringing valves and pistons into contact. Five seconds of cranking, then a pause, is the sensible limit — and if two or three attempts do nothing, stop and get advice.
