Oil Degradation, Dilution and Daily Duty Cycles

The duty cycle of a commercial vehicle—how it is driven day in and day out—has a massive impact on the life span of an EcoBlue engine. A Transit Custom that spends its life cruising up and down the M6 at a steady 70 mph is operating entirely differently from one that starts and stops a hundred times a day delivering parcels around Manchester city centre.

The latter duty cycle is particularly brutal because of oil dilution. When a diesel van is forced into repeated short journeys, the engine rarely reaches its optimal operating temperature. The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) on the Transit Custom captures soot and periodically burns it off into harmless ash in a process called regeneration. Passive regeneration happens naturally when the exhaust is very hot—usually during a long run on the dual carriageway.

If the van never gets hot enough, it attempts an active regeneration. The EcoBlue uses a dedicated DPF vaporiser (sometimes called a fifth injector) located in the exhaust system. Can I just ignore the AdBlue countdown?

Absolutely not. The countdown is hardcoded into the engine management system to comply with emissions laws. Once the gauge reaches zero, the ECU will electronically prevent the engine from starting. You cannot bypass this with a simple code reader. If the countdown is dropping rapidly despite the tank being full, you have a system fault (usually crystallisation, pump failure, or a NOx sensor error) that requires specialist diagnosis.
