Over time, this trap fills up. The van is designed to burn this captured soot away automatically in a process called "regeneration." However, for the van to undergo regeneration, the exhaust must reach a very high temperature. This generally only happens when the van is driven at high speeds (such as on a motorway) for an extended period.
