Ford 1.5 EcoBoost repairs in Manchester

The 1.5 EcoBoost is the engine a lot of Ford owners choose when they want more than the 1.0 can offer without moving to a diesel. It pulls well, it is refined, and in day-to-day driving it feels like a much bigger engine. It also has one particular weakness that has become well known among owners and specialists alike: coolant finding its way into places it should never be.

An overview of the 1.5 EcoBoost engine family

There are two quite different engines wearing the 1.5 EcoBoost badge, and knowing which one you have matters.

The four-cylinder 1.5 EcoBoost arrived in 2014, largely as a replacement for the 1.6 in Focus, Mondeo, Kuga and C-Max. It uses a chain-driven camshaft arrangement, direct injection, a single turbocharger and — on many versions — an integrated exhaust manifold cast into the cylinder head. Outputs sit between roughly 148bhp and 180bhp.

The three-cylinder 1.5 EcoBoost followed in 2017, essentially a stretched version of the 1.0 with cylinder deactivation, and it appears in Focus, Fiesta ST, Puma ST and Transit Connect. This one uses a wet belt rather than a chain, so it shares the belt-in-oil considerations of the smaller engine.

The integrated exhaust manifold is central to the story. Casting the manifold into the head lets the engine warm up quickly and cuts weight, but it puts coolant passages right alongside extremely hot exhaust gas. Over many heat cycles that area is under constant thermal stress, and it is where the cracks that cause coolant intrusion tend to appear.

Common faults on the 1.5 EcoBoost

Coolant intrusion into the cylinder

This is the headline fault on the four-cylinder engine. A crack develops in the cylinder head, usually around the integrated exhaust manifold area, and coolant seeps into a combustion chamber. Because it is a slow seep, the engine keeps running and the only clue is a coolant level that drops with no leak on the driveway.

Left alone it progresses. Coolant in a cylinder washes the oil film off the bore, steam-cleans the piston crown, fouls the spark plug and eventually causes a misfire. In the worst cases enough coolant collects when the engine is stopped to cause hydraulic lock on the next start, which bends a connecting rod and ends the engine.

The important message is that a 1.5 EcoBoost quietly using coolant is not a minor issue to keep an eye on. It is the early stage of a serious fault, and catching it early is the difference between a head repair and a replacement engine.

Head gasket failure and overheating

Coolant intrusion and head gasket failure produce similar symptoms and are often confused. A failed gasket typically shows as pressurisation of the expansion bottle, mayonnaise-like residue under the oil cap, white smoke that does not clear, and a temperature gauge that climbs in traffic. Once an engine has genuinely overheated, the head can distort, which then causes the gasket to fail — so it becomes a loop. Our head gasket repair page explains how we approach it.

Cooling system component failures

Not every coolant problem is a cracked head, and we always rule out the cheaper causes first. Plastic degas bottles crack, particularly around the seams. Thermostat housings warp and weep. Water pumps leak from the weep hole or lose impeller efficiency. Radiators develop pinholes from road salt, and hoses harden with age. Any of these will cause the same low-coolant warning, and all of them are far less expensive to fix.

Turbocharger and boost control faults

Turbo problems on the 1.5 show up as loss of power, limp mode, a whining or whistling noise, or over/under-boost fault codes. Sometimes the turbo itself is worn; often it is the wastegate actuator, a split boost hose, a sticking charge-air pipe seal or a faulty pressure sensor. Timing chain wear and wet belt wear

On the four-cylinder engine, a stretched timing chain announces itself with a rattle on start-up and cam correlation codes; this is covered on our timing chain replacement page. Carbon build-up and misfires

As a direct-injection engine, the 1.5 suffers carbon deposits on the inlet valves over time, giving a lumpy idle and hesitation. Combined with a coil pack nearing the end of its life, it can look far more alarming than it is.

Symptoms to look out for

  • Coolant level dropping steadily with nothing visible on the ground
  • The low coolant warning appearing repeatedly after topping up
  • White smoke or steam from the exhaust that does not clear once warm
  • A sweet smell from the exhaust or under the bonnet
  • Misfire on one cylinder, especially first thing in the morning
  • Temperature gauge climbing in slow traffic then settling on the move
  • Expansion bottle pressurised or gurgling after switching off
  • Loss of power, limp mode or unexpected boost codes
  • Start-up rattle on four-cylinder cars

Our diagnostic process

Coolant faults are the ones garages most often get wrong, because the symptoms overlap. We work through them in a set order.

First, a full system fault code scan with freeze-frame data, followed by live data on coolant temperature, misfire counters, fuel trims and boost. Next, a cooling system pressure test with the engine cold and again warm, which reveals external leaks and tells us whether the system holds pressure at all.

Then a combustion gas test on the coolant. This looks for exhaust gases in the cooling system and is the single most useful test for separating a leaking hose from a head problem. If it is positive we know gas is crossing between the combustion chamber and the coolant, and we investigate further rather than guessing.

From there we borescope the cylinders. On a 1.5 with coolant intrusion, one piston crown is usually noticeably cleaner than the rest — steam has scrubbed it. That, together with a leak-down test and a spark plug inspection, tells us which cylinder is affected and how far it has gone. Where the head comes off, we pressure test and crack test it properly before deciding whether it can be reused.

Repair options

What we recommend depends entirely on what the tests show.

Cooling system repair. If the loss is coming from a bottle, hose, housing, pump or radiator, we replace the failed part, refill with the correct specification coolant and pressure test again to confirm.

Cylinder head work. Where the head has failed we remove it, have it checked for flatness, cracks and pressure integrity, and either repair or replace it. The gasket, head bolts and any heat-affected ancillaries are renewed as a matter of course.

Engine rebuild. If coolant has been in a cylinder for a while, bore wash and bearing damage may mean a bottom-end rebuild is the right call. See engine rebuilds.

Engine replacement. Where a rod has bent or the block is damaged, a good used or reconditioned engine is normally faster and better value than a full rebuild. Details on our engine replacement page.

Preventative maintenance

You cannot design out a cracked head, but you can catch it early and you can avoid making it worse. Check the coolant level in the expansion bottle at least monthly when the engine is cold — that one habit catches most 1.5 EcoBoost problems long before they become terminal. Use the correct Ford-specification coolant and never mix types; the wrong mix can attack seals and gaskets.

Service on schedule with the right oil grade, and on three-cylinder cars plan for wet belt replacement at five years or 70,000 miles. Do not ignore a temperature gauge that reads higher than normal, even if it comes back down. And if the car has overheated even once, have the cooling system checked properly afterwards rather than assuming it got away with it.

Why is my Ford 1.5 EcoBoost losing coolant with no leak?

On the four-cylinder 1.5 this is often coolant intrusion caused by a crack in the cylinder head near the integrated exhaust manifold. It can also be a cracked expansion bottle, thermostat housing or water pump, so we test rather than assume.

How do you confirm coolant intrusion?

We combine a cooling system pressure test, a combustion gas test on the coolant, a borescope inspection of the cylinders and a leak-down test. A cylinder that looks steam-cleaned compared with the others is a strong indicator.

Can a 1.5 EcoBoost with coolant intrusion be repaired?

Often yes, with cylinder head repair or replacement, provided it is caught before the coolant has damaged the bores or bearings. Once hydraulic lock has bent a rod, a rebuild or replacement engine is needed.

Is it safe to keep driving while topping up the coolant?

No. Continuing to drive lets coolant wash the oil film off the bore and risks a hydraulic lock on start-up, which can end the engine. Have it inspected as soon as you notice repeated top-ups.

Does the 1.5 EcoBoost have a wet belt or a timing chain?
