You are driving along the M60, the radio is playing, the commute is going smoothly, and suddenly you hear that familiar chime. You look down, and a brightly coloured warning light has appeared on your dashboard. If you're like most drivers, your heart might sink just a little. Whether you drive a nimble 1.0L Fiesta, a family-hauling Kuga, or a hard-working Transit Custom, seeing a warning light in a modern Ford is a common experience, but it isn't something you should automatically lose sleep over.

The Traffic Light System: Red vs Yellow
Before we dive into the specific symbols, the easiest way to understand your dashboard is to apply the universal rules of the traffic light system. Ford uses colours very deliberately to communicate the urgency of the problem.
- Green or Blue: These are simply informational lights. They confirm that a system is actively working. For instance, your cruise control is engaged, or your high-beam headlights are on. No action is required.
- Yellow or Amber: This means "Caution" or "Advisory." The engine management system has detected a fault. It is generally safe to continue driving to your destination or to a garage, but you should drive gently. Do not push the engine hard, and get the vehicle inspected as soon as you can to prevent a minor fault turning into a major one.
- Red: This means "Stop." A red warning light is critical. It indicates a severe problem that could compromise your safety or cause catastrophic damage to the engine if you continue to drive. You should find a safe place to pull over, switch off the engine immediately, and seek recovery.
The Check Engine Light (The Engine Block Symbol)
Technically known as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), this amber symbol looking like the profile of an engine is perhaps the most misunderstood light on the dashboard. When this light comes on permanently, it means the computer has logged a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) related to the emissions or engine management system.
Because the engine management system oversees so many different components, this light can triggered by a vast number of issues. On our typical working day carrying out Ford EcoBoost repairs, we find that the check engine light is usually caused by things like:
- Engine Misfires: A faulty spark plug, a failing ignition coil pack, or a blocked fuel injector. You will usually feel a judder or a noticeable lack of power when accelerating.
- Sensor Failures: Components like the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or the Lambda (Oxygen) sensor in the exhaust. If these provide the wrong readings, the engine struggles to balance the air-to-fuel ratio, resulting in poor fuel economy and rough idling.
- Vacuum Leaks: A split intake hose or a faulty PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve can let unmetered air into the engine, causing it to run poorly.
If the check engine light is glowing steady amber, drive carefully and book the car in. However, if the check engine light is flashing, this is an entirely different story. A flashing check engine light indicates a severe, continuous misfire that is dumping unburnt fuel straight into the exhaust. If you keep driving with a flashing engine light, you will quickly destroy the catalytic converter, which is a very expensive part to replace.
The Spanner Symbol (Powertrain Fault)
Many drivers mistake the amber spanner symbol for a simple "Service Due" reminder. In a Ford, a routine service message usually appears as text on the driver information screen. The spanner symbol actually indicates a Powertrain Fault or Electronic Throttle Control issue.
When the spanner light illuminates, you will almost certainly notice a drop in performance. This is because the engine's computer has triggered "Limp Home Mode." Limp mode deliberately restricts the engine's power and limits your speed to protect the mechanical components from further damage while allowing you to safely limp off the motorway or to a local garage.
This light often relates to issues with the electronic throttle body, communication faults between control modules, or faults within the turbo system, such as a sticking wastegate or actuator. If your Ford is suffering from severe underboost or overboost, the ECU will use the spanner light to warn you. In these cases, we often find the vehicle requires dedicated attention, which might include Ford turbo replacement or a thorough induction system overhaul.
The Red Oil Can (Low Oil Pressure)
If there is one light to memorise, it is this one. The red oil can dripping a drop of oil means only one thing: your engine has lost oil pressure. This is a critical emergency.
Oil pressure is the lifeblood of your engine. It keeps a microscopic film of lubrication between rapidly moving metal parts. Without pressure, metal grinds directly against metal. Bearings can spin, camshafts can score, and the engine can seize completely in a matter of minutes, or even seconds.
If this light comes on while you are driving, check your mirrors, pull over safely the moment you can, and turn the engine off immediately. Do not attempt to drive home, even if it is just a mile away, and do not just rely on checking the dipstick. Your engine might be completely full of oil but simply have no pressure to pump it around.
In our Oldham workshop, this red oil light is a frequent sight on 1.0L EcoBoost and 2.0L EcoBlue engines, and it is largely tied to the wet belt system. As the timing belt operates in oil, it slowly degrades over time. Minute rubber fibres shed from the belt and fall into the oil sump, where they get sucked up and block the oil pick-up strainer. Once the strainer is blocked, the oil pump is choked, pressure drops, and the red light appears.
To prevent this scenario, our independent workshop advice is generally to look at having the wet belt replaced at around 5 years or 70,000 miles. Keep in mind that intervals can vary depending on your specific model and how the vehicle is used, but catching it early is always the safest bet. Planning ahead for a wet belt replacement is a fraction of the cost and stress compared to fixing an engine that has suffered complete oil starvation. When oil starvation goes unnoticed, the internal mechanical damage is often so catastrophic that customers are entirely reliant on complete engine rebuilds to get their vehicle back on the road.
Engine Coolant Temperature Warning (The Thermometer)
This red symbol resembles a thermometer standing in liquid. It means your engine is overheating. Just like the low oil pressure light, a red coolant warning requires you to pull over safely and switch off the engine as soon as possible.
Fords engines, especially modern aluminium block EcoBoosts, cannot tolerate high temperatures. Overheating causes the metal cylinder head to warp, which leads to head gasket failure and allows coolant to mix with oil—creating a thick, milky sludge inside your engine.
Common causes for an overheating Ford include a split coolant hose, a failing water pump, a stuck thermostat, or a leaking radiator. If you pop the bonnet after seeing this light, never attempt to unscrew the cap on the coolant expansion tank while the engine is hot. The system is highly pressurised, and boiling coolant will spray out and cause severe burns. Let the engine cool down completely before checking the fluid levels. If the tank is empty, you have a leak that needs immediate professional attention.
The DPF Warning Light (For Diesel Drivers)
If you drive a Transit Custom, a Ranger, or a TDCi/EcoBlue car, you need to know about the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) light. The symbol looks like an exhaust box with small circles or dots inside it.
The DPF's job is to trap harmful soot particles from the exhaust gas. When the filter gets full, the car performs an active "regeneration" by injecting a little extra fuel to raise exhaust temperatures and burn the soot into a fine ash. However, this process requires the correct conditions—usually driving at a steady speed of over 40mph for about 15 to 20 minutes.
If you only use your diesel Ford for short school runs or heavy stop-start urban delivery routes, the exhaust never gets hot enough to perform this automatic clean. The DPF light will illuminate amber to warn you that the filter is becoming blocked.
If you see the amber DPF light, the best course of action is to take the vehicle for a decent run down the motorway to allow it to regenerate. If you ignore the amber light and the filter becomes severely blocked, the light may turn red, or the check engine light and spanner light will join it on the dashboard. At this stage, the van will go into limp mode, and a drive on the motorway will no longer fix it; you will need a forced static regeneration or a chemical clean in a workshop.
Glow Plug Warning Light (The Coiled Spring)
Another diesel-only light, the glow plug symbol looks like a coiled yellow wire. When you turn your ignition on, this light should illuminate for a few seconds to warm up the cylinders for a clean start, then go out. Once it goes out, you start the engine.
However, if the glow plug light starts flashing while you are driving, this is Ford's way of indicating a major engine management fault on a diesel vehicle (similar to a flashing check engine light on a petrol). A flashing coil usually points to problems with fuel rail pressure, fuel injectors, the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve, or the turbocharger.
The Battery / Charging System Warning Light
Many people assume a red battery light just means they need a new battery. What it actually means is that the vehicle's electrical system is running at a lower voltage than it should because the battery is not being charged.
Modern Fords use a "Smart Charge" system. If this light comes on while driving, the immediate culprit is often a snapped auxiliary drive belt (which turns the alternator) or a failure of the alternator itself. Since your vehicle requires electricity for the fuel pump, spark plugs, steering, and engine computer, the car will eventually die completely once the battery's stored reserve is drained. If the battery light appears, turn off all non-essential electrical items like the heated seats, air conditioning, and radio, and head straight to a garage.

A common misconception is that when an engine light comes on, a mechanic just plugs in a computer, the computer tells them exactly what part to replace, and the job is done. The reality is quite different.
The warning light and the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) stored in the module simply give us a direction to look. To use an analogy: if your car is a city, the error code gives us the postcode of the problem, but we still have to find exactly which house on the street is broken.

Can I still drive my Ford if the engine light is yellow?
Yes, usually. A solid yellow or amber warning light indicates a fault that needs addressing, but it is not an immediate emergency. You can drive the car, but you should keep your speeds low, avoid heavy acceleration, and book it in for diagnostics as soon as you comfortably can.
Will disconnecting my battery clear the warning light?
Disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes may temporarily turn the light off, but it will not fix the underlying mechanical or electrical fault. Furthermore, disconnecting the battery wipes the frozen data that our diagnostic equipment uses to pinpoint the exact conditions under which the fault occurred. It is much better to leave it alone and bring it to us with the code intact.
Will a dashboard warning light cause an MOT failure?
Yes. If the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (Check Engine Light), Airbag light, ABS light, or Electronic Power Steering warning light are illuminated, your Ford will fail its MOT instantly. The vehicle must be free of major dashboard warnings to be considered roadworthy.
What exactly is "Limp Mode"?
Limp mode (or Limp Home Mode) is a self-preservation software program built into your Ford's ECU. When the computer detects a fault that could damage the engine or completely compromise emissions, it limits the amount of fuel and air the engine receives. You will feel a massive loss of power, and often the transmission will not shift into higher gears. It is designed to let you limp to a safe stop or directly to a local workshop.
The light went out on its own, does this mean the car fixed itself?
Engines do not fix themselves. If the light goes out, you likely have an intermittent fault, such as a loose wiring connection or a sensor that is only failing under specific temperatures. The computer will still have the code stored in its history as a "pending" or "historic" code, which we can retrieve to investigate the issue.
